It’s the 1st day of camp & the best way to help your dancers be prepared is for you to know what you’re getting into. I know if I can feel prepared things usually go more smoothly for my family. I want to give you the same.
I teach dance out of my home. My adress is 41327 W. Little Dr. I live in the Lakes subdivision. I have an upstairs loft that I have turned into my dance studio. When you get to my house try your best to park out of the way of someone’s driveway.
When you get to the door just come on in & head upstairs. Once I have a few students here I don’t want to run up & down the stairs to answer the door. It feels weird but it is the norm around here.
Upstairs I have chairs set up for parents to stay & watch. I just ask that you take phone calls or conversations outside. There is no way I can be loud enough to be heard over 8 dancers, 8 parents, & our music. Sometimes there are more people plus tap shoes. I am loud but even I have limits.
We will do 3 styles this summer jazz, ballet & contemporary. In all the styles stretching is our very 1st thing.
We start off with stretching to help our muscles avoid injuries. It is also a great way for your dancer to understand how their muscles work.
In Ballet we will head to the barre’ to work through plie’, tundu, petite battment, & retire’. Working through body positions to connect us with movements used center floor.
We head center floor in ballet to work on adagio meaning slow deliberate movements. We use our Tundu to prep for pirouette, plie to push us into pirouette & retire’ to hold our turn.
The across the floor for ballet uses all the things we learned at the barre’ & center floor to move us across the floor with jump, turns, & kicks.
In jazz & contemporary we work on balance & turns center floor. Balance is important for so many things in dance from turning to kicks & landing jumps without injury.
Then we go across the floor using sequences that build strength. They connect to create flow.
All of these things are to help your dancer make connections in their body so they can move smarter & build confidence.
I try to spend 20 minutes in each section to give them a solid foundation.
